It was an exciting day at Great Abington on Tuesday this week. TWI, The Welding Institute, located on our doorstep in Abington, kindly sent some engineers to show us a little about what they do. To make it extra exciting they helped the children to do some welding with chocolate! The children made box girders out of four welded bars of chocolate. They made the welds by melting the edge of the chocolate bars against a bottle of hot water then placed them in formers to harden. Increasing weights were added to compare the strength of these with a single flat bar. The welded girder shape turned out to be much stronger - but tasted the same when it did actually fail! What a great start to science week and thank you very much to TWI for coming.
